Islamic ethics (أخلاق إسلامية), defined as "good character," historically took shape gradually from the 7th century and was finally established by the 11th century. It was eventually shaped as a successful amalgamation of the Qur'anic teachings, the teachings of Muhammad, the precedents of Islamic jurists (see Sharia and Fiqh), the pre-Islamic Arabian tradition, and non-Arabic. Muslims base their laws on their holy book the Qur'an, and the Sunnah. Muslims believe the Sunnah is the practical example of Prophet Muhammad and that there are five basic Pillars of Islam.
The Quran is the holy book of the Islamic world. Collected over a year period during the 7th century C.E., the Quran is said to consist of Allah's revelations to the prophet Muhammad, transmitted through the angel Gabriel. Islam teaches on a multitude of topics. It is monotheistic, denies the deity of Christ, denies the Trinity, and denies salvation by grace alone. Salvation in Islam is my sincere repentance with the hope that Allah will forgive the Muslim. However, Islam teaches the only way to be sure to go to heaven is to die in holy war.
This solidly researched book explores Islam’s history, basic structure and beliefs in order to help us understand Islam’s current moderate-extremist split. The authors move readers beyond stereotypes of Muhammad and reject the myth that relatively recent events are the only cause for the clash between Islam and the West. No God but God by Reza Aslan is an oldie but goody about the origins of Islam. If you want to know how the religion of Islam started, what the early Muslims were like and how the landscape changed politically, culturally and in terms of faith as Islam spread across the world, this book is for you.
